Air Purifiers Don't Work and Make Air Pollution Worst

by Adrian Guerrero on September 27, 2021

Air Purifiers are not a trend! They're vital for optimal respiratory health. You don't need to have allergies or asthma to get one. Most people simply want to have cleaner indoor air. On average, Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors where the concentration of some pollutants is often 2 to 5 times higher than typical outdoor environments. So air purifiers seem like a good choice if you're not trying to end up a statistic. After all, more than 8.7 million people die every year from air pollution – 20% of all deaths. Even if it doesn’t kill you, air pollution cuts an average of 2 years from the lives of the global population, and up to 6 years in highly polluted nations such as China and India, making it a bigger killer than smoking, car crashes, and HIV/Aids. But are air purifiers extending your life span by trying to improve your indoor air quality? According to our research, they’re a double-edged sword.

The big problem that all air purifier companies don't want you to know is every single air purifier on the marking set humanity back a step in tackling the world's air pollution crisis. Why? Because all air purifiers are made of plastics. And since big companies subcontract the manufacturing process overseas for the cheap labor cost, many overseas companies abuse loose regulations on production guidelines by not properly filtering contaminated air before pumping it outside for their citizens to breathe to cut overhead costs. The result? Air pollution killed a whopping 4.2 million people in China and India alone due to their countries production-driven motto vs only 197,000 deaths in the USA since their a consumer-driven economy according to Statista in 2019.

How are air purifiers made? Plastic that's synthesized from oil is made by isolating hydrocarbons, breaking them down into their parts, and then reconstituting these parts into entirely new formations never before seen in nature. This process releases co2 and microplastic into the atmosphere resulting in air pollution and global warming. Aside from air pollution, the process contaminates our drinking water, kills marine life, and crams our landfills with plastic products that take 1000 years to fully decompose. Air pollution can cause difficulty breathing, flare-ups of allergy or asthma, and other lung problems. Long-term exposure to it can raise the risk of other diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Oh, and did I mention it causes 20% of all deaths worldwide? The bottom line is producing air purifiers contaminates the very air they’re designed to filter.

Unfortunately, the U.S. air purifier market size was estimated at 1.75 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach 2.01 billion in 2020. You can rest assure that Covid-19 only increases the demand for air purifiers since individuals became more aware of the importance of protecting their lungs. Safe to say they're not going anywhere anytime soon which means air quality will continue to worsen around the world.Imagine the amount of co2 and microplastics that have already been released into the air while producing the plastics needed to manufacture these products in an attempt to solve the very problem they’re creating. Moving away from plastics is the only way to truly fight air pollution at its source in a proactive manner rather than reactive. A new study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology says humans may be consuming anywhere from 39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles a year. With added estimates of how much microplastic might be inhaled, that number is more than 74,000. Companies like Honeywell, Blueair US, Levoit, and Dyson are knowingly putting profit ahead of the public’s health. What the world needs is an eco-friendly air purifying system that puts everyone’s health first. Until then, our outdoor and indoor air will continue to become more toxic and air pollution death statistics will continue to skyrocket.
